Bras Across the Water is my fundraising event to promote Breast Cancer awareness and raise money for the Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation. On September 30, 2005, I am going to steer a small boat with a sail made out of bras to an island in the middle of Percy Priest Lake. While I am on the island, I will be updating this blog hourly with photos, comments, and observations (and probably requests for camping tips). The idea is for me to collect pledges for every hour I remain on the island similar to a Bike-a-thon or jog-a-thon, except this is going to be more of a survive-a-thon. If I can get 100 people to pledge $1/hour, and I hold out for 48 hours, that will raise nearly $5000! Spending forty-eight hours alone on an island may not seem like a big deal to you, but for this 42 year-old city boy who hasn't been camping since he was a teenager, is terrified of snakes, and thinks dial-up internet is barbaric, it should be quite an adventure.

Islands in the Stream

click here for larger viewThe preliminary list of islands to be used as base camp for Bras Across the Water has been narrowed down to three (see photo). It is important that I have a couple of alternate sites because the Army Corps of Engineers says there are no reservations for primitive camping sites; each site is available on a first-come first-serve basis, and the placement of camping equipment on a campsite for the purpose of reserving that site for future use is prohibited. I cannot be certain which islands will be available the weekend of the event (September 30-October 2), but I am hopeful that waiting until after the Labor Day weekend will reduce the competition for camping space.

I am going to take Mrs. Moondog with me to the launching area this afternoon on a photo reconnaissance mission. She is very handy with a camera, and I am hopeful that her zoom lens will provide some details of the topography that will prove useful.

big box of brasI have received a half a dozen verbal commitments to provide bras for the sail, but so far the "Big Box of Bras" is still empty.
